Malpractice, or Love’s the Best Doctor

directed by Ruth Griffin

Fresno State University Theatre

The sound design I created for Malpractice, directed by Ruth Griffin, was minimal.  The majority of the soundscape came from Professor Griffin’s careful selection of music.  Often, I am charged with finding music as part of the sound design for a show, but this director’s style is grounded in physical theatre and the movement is carefully choreographed to the music.  Choosing the music is part of her process in creating the show.  Griffin provides me with her ideas and I translate those into a realized design, functional for playback in a live production.  Creating seamless edits in music is a skill that does take time to master.  I create her edits and arrange the music for playback. Here are a few examples of these edits:

This clip includes the original song intro, but then skips straight to a part of the song that normally comes in 25 seconds later:

This clip loops around 33 seconds and repeats:

Additionally, I developed a handful of sound effects used in the show:

The “rug” sound that foreshadowed the abyss that would “suck” a character down.

The “birds and bees” sound that was heard when the “birds and bees” talk was referenced in the play.
