Cloud 9 is a tale of confused sexual identity that jumps in time and space between acts. Act one takes place in colonial Africa in Victorian times, whereas act two in 1979 in London. Although roughly 100 years have passed between acts, only 25 years have passed for the characters. The lighting was meant to be realistic, yet stylized.
Clive ventures away from his African home, into the jungle. Foliage gobos show that this scene takes place away from the family’s home.
Betty and Harry Bagley are at the family’s home in act one. The sun sets in the background.
Betty, Victoria, Edward, Lin and Cathy are at the park on a cold, grey day in London.
The two Betty’s reconcile in this magical moment at the end of the play.
