Louisa May Alcott’s classic tale is transformed into a Broadway-style musical.
Jo expresses her frustrations about the publication of her story to Professor Bhaer at the boarding house in New York. A gobo is projected on the back wall to indicate the location of this scene is in the boarding house, rather than the March house where the majority of the play takes place.
Marmee sings about her trials raising her daughters and missing her husband while he is away at war.
Jo sings about her ambitions to succeed in society to please her Aunt March so that her aunt will take her to Europe. A window gobo is used to indicate the setting at Aunt March’s home.
Beth sings with Mr. Laurence during this tender moment that marks the beginning of a special friendship between these two characters.
Jo exposes her head after selling her hair so that she could give Marmee money to visit the girl’s father.
Jo’s fantastical story comes to life as she explains the plot to Mrs. Kirke and Professor Bhaer after selling it to the weekly volcano press for publication.
As Jo’s story plays behind her, she acts out the motions of the characters in dim light in the boarding house.
The lights come up on Jo in the boarding house as she joins her fantasy characters to sing the reprise the “The Weekly Volcano Press” number.
Professor Bhaer visits the March house on the day of Amy’s wedding to ask Jo for her hand in marriage.
